From Zero to Hero - Allahyarham Tuan Hj.Abbas Bandung

**Atuk Pakeh and Hj.Abbas Bandung on sarung in the middle and Buya Hamka, ayah far end right.

More info on the vist of Buya Hamka then, visit here.

It was two years ago I wrote in the blog about 'The Minang Connection'(Dec.2005 archives)
The early 'sawo matang' immgrant in Malacca.Malacca or 'Maaalako' with a a thick minang accent as prounounce by my late grandad Hj.Pakeh Temenggong aka Pak Tuo as he is affectionaly know among the minang community in Malacca back then.
He pass away peacefully in 1983,the most remembered is how he was call by his Lord, fell down and rush to home in unconsious state, after locking the last wooden door of his shop preparing to call it a day as usual.
It shows how deep the love for his shop and job .As his shop advertisment written,as I remembered then, 'PAKIH TEMENGGONG MENJAHIT SONGKOK AND CAPAL'.

How I wish I could have that zinc made advertisment both enscript in Malay and Jawi or the very least a photo of it.
That his life proffession and yes if you have met him you would definately fall in love with the wise old gentry.
Man with few word and all day his eye's down to earth, concentrating on what he knew best,on the sewing machine, his only techno gadget and a transistor radio as his companion.
Remain a Bachelor till death after the dismiss of my beloved grand-ma Nenek Sayan in 1968.How many of us still do 'till death depart'with our other half?
How I wonder!!

This written blog is not about him,but about a man who stood on firm ground and remain a loyal friend to Arwah ATUK.
He left a legacy in Malacca and much remembered by all fellows Old Guru-Guru Melayu of Malaccans.
As his name stood High and Tall among the contributors of the development of Malay Interlectuals in post independence era.
He is not a politician, neither do a nationalist but a visionary buisness man which put all his skill of hard work, determination and persistence will WINS.
Malacca in the pre and post Merdekah days was a sleepy hollow.
It slips away being the centre of trade and commerce because largely due to the fact, that Kuala Lumpur the new adminstritive city was laid and shift in 1923.
Since than Malacca lost its centre point.
Thanks to Yap Ah Loy the Chief Capitan MAFIA Cina'.
(If one wants to dispute those facts, pleased clarified it with Prof.Zainal Keling or Prof.Khoo Kay Kim,they are able to clarified futher)

One of the main legecy left by the Brits,is the 2 tiers Education system, the English schools medium and the Malay Medium. As a result of this diversity two set of text books are need and written in Bahasa Melayu and in English.
Without a single doubt, the problemmatic of logistic issues arise in the newly independency nation.
We want Malay schools but no text books writers in Bahasa Melayu,we do not have ample and capable writers in Maths,Science or vocational subjects in Bahasa Melayu and worst of it, we do not have able and qualified teachers to teach in Bahasa Melayu Maths,Science ot technical subject to our children.
As a result, the Kementerian then import Indonesian teachers to teach our children Maths and Science because most of the Malay teachers then, were only capable of teaching sejarah and ilmu alam or Bahasa Melayu then.

Thus, the question arise, where do we get those Malay text books?
In Malacca those days two prominent text bookshop are monopoloised by Lim Brothers and Tai Kuang Bookshop.
They only sell English Text books and mag.
Even me, gets my weekly Beano and Danny comics from Lim Brothers or the Uncle's Aneh shop junction of Jln Bunga Raya. The Hole in wall type of shops.

I remembered well this geniune smiling face Pak Aji.
Short and stout in nature.Always with a 'Songkok Hitam'.
Very loving in nature. Each time I goes to the shop I will always gets a sweets of 'Halls'Lemon in flavor from him.
His shop only stocks Malay book either novels, magazine and the main distributor for Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in Melaka.Under his wings and supervision the mushrooming of small petty bookshop scattred in Melaka all over.
In Mesjid Tanah,Melimau.Jasin till the far fetch the boundry of Malacca states. The provisional schools are mostly of the Malay medium thus,TOKO BUKU ABBAS BANDUNG provides the missing gap of malay text books to the provisional schools.
The story of success of Tuan Hj.Abbas Md.Yatim has a long history. It is rather not discuss of how he built the book empire in Malacca. He was a dear friend of arwah datuk Pakeh.According to family ledgend,he arrive from Padang, atuk's kampong in view of being a teacher, which he was in Padang.
He teachers Quranic lesson in Kg.Banda Kaba.A pios man,He stays with arwah datuk in Kg.Banda Kaba together with nenek Sayan and ayah in the beginning stage and the rest is history.
I remembered well during my schooling days, when I have free time,I begin with Lim Brothers browsing for the latest Beano and Dandy and next the Tai Kuang ended up at his bookshop browing for latest Antrologi cerpen or novels. My early collection of Grand Pa (Dato'Samad Said)Salina etc...were all from his bookshop including Tongkat Warrant (Usman Awang),Keris Mas,Salmi Manja,Pram Meodya Anantantor,W.S Rendra,Khatijah Hashim,Latif Mohiddin (He is more of a painter),Fatimah Busu including Mastika,Dewan Masyarakat,Salina,Diskusi,Dewan Pelajar etc are still in my home library. Those where the first edition copies and I am proud owner of the first edition copies.

Without a single doubt Tuan Hj.Abbas Hj.Md.Yatim contribution to the malay community is well acknowledged. His buisness acuman without doubt set a precedent to the young new Malay interlectual breed in Malacca.
It is only via his bookshop the accumulation of knowledge grows among the Malay are noted. As the sahih Hadith "seek knowledge till China'

From my logic thought 'seek both knowledge and wealth as Tuan Hj.Abbas Bandung did"
I suppose it is full of barakah on 'hijrah'
and make the Awal Muharram 1429 more meaningfull

Al.Fatiha.
Allahyarham Tuan Hj.Abbas Hj.Md.Yatim pengasas 'TOKO BUKU ABBAS BANDUNG'

Keretek -Tak Nak Ke ?

Some 50 years ago at a diplomatic reception in London, one man stood out.He was short by European standard and thin and he wore a black fez ie. songkok over his white hair. And from his mouth he breathed a stream of aromatic smoke that permeated the reception hall.

This man Hj.Agus Salim, the Republic of Indonesia first ambassador to Great Britian, refers to in his country as the 'Grand Old Man'.
Pak Agus, was among the 1st.generation of Indonesian to have recieved a western education. In this regards he was a 'rare spicies' for at the end of the Dutch hegemony over Indonesia in 1942,less than 4% of the country population could read or write.

Not surprising,Pak Agus appears and demour not to mention the strange smell of his cigarettes - quickly turned him into the centre of attention. One gentleman put into words the question that was on everyone lips,"What is that thing you are smoking ,sir?"

Replied candidly and sharp by Pak Agus,"That, your Excellency?"
Pak Agus is reported to have said,it is the reasons for which the West conqured the world".

In fact,he was smoking a Kretek,an Indonesian cigarettes spiced with cloves which for centuries was one of the worlds most sought after spice.

Hmmm....I remember watching 'The Tengku' a chain-smoker, on the 31st August 'Merdeka Day' state of address to the nation before live TV telecast,Sipping Kopi 'O' and a few puff of John Players unfiltered.

I am sure the Film Negara or Akib Negara film archives has the reels to prove my point.
Again not only Proton or Petronas could be a National pride, cigarettes too could be our main exported to sell the countrys name and image.

So...what so special about the Tak Nak programme?
Nak Tak Nak aje?
Me a 'Sempoerna Mild' guy.

Football.....The Curi Ayam Game

**ayah 1952**

Yes..yes the football fever is on again.
Me like any others male species are hook to the game and could not resist to watch the live telecast.

Wow....hang on a minute, anyone has any interesting tale to tell about football?
Yes the 'curi ayam'slang meaning a foul play by footballers every time a players cross over before the ball reached the line.
What ever it means, it does mean something to our local foot pundits.

Me basically,my daily pocket money comes from football.
Yeap..ayah is a football umpire and active one too,
'Joe Play Go'- The Football Umpire the locals nick name him.
Call it a shot he will be there on any afternoon at the Bandar Hilir padang, that is before the Padang turns into a concreate jungle by the State Government, turning the Padang at first as a 'Sound and Lighting Arena' and later I don't know what other mall they wanted to build for a population of a small city of 100,000 population.
Gone with the playing fields supposed to dig the talented Malaccan football players and up the mass super shopping mall.
Well, any newly decorated so call city needed a brand new shopping mall,I supposed

Yes, being a football freak the Imam of my kampong, the late Iman Hj.Sapau is one freak of a footballer.
There was on one occasion, the Malacca Team led by 'The Towkey aka Soh Chin Ann" was playing for the FA Cup.It was the was the semi-finalist game,if I may recall. He refuses to leads the Fridays prayers solely to enable him to see the match at the Kubu Stadium.I wonder when will the new state Stadium would be ready?
It seems it take ages to built one.

The Padang do have historical significant.
Firstly, it was the first Padang where the Proclaimation of Independence was hail by 'The Tengku' in 1956 arriving back from the pre independence discussion with the English Authority.
During its hey day, the padang not only breezees with cooling air from the seas of the Straits of Malacca but fill with leisure activities in the evening.
After a football match ayah will walk with me to the nearest stall for supper of Rojak and Satay not forgetting Air Tebu at Wak Temu stall under the 'Old Gum tree' right facing the famous 'A Famosa'.Fresh food off course.
Arwah Wak Temu is the dad of the National Hockey player Kamaruddin Temu.

It was from this field the birth of our National Skipper, now a Dato Soh Chin Ann aka 'Towkeh' is born.So does the national hockeys players Tam Kuan Seng,Haridas,Zamani Othman,Razak Leman,Zulkifli Bakar and Adnan Bakar both are sibling is groom.
Those were the days we play football and hockey for the love of the game not for the sake of money. The pride to be able to represent the state was a honour and be look up at,since under 12 MSSM competition.

Ayah, an avid sportman ever since his young age till now has instill a high level of sportmanship in me ever since I was a wee lad.
Even though I do not excel in any sports but I do enjoy watching a good game.
It haves been instilled in me and it comes naturally.

That was how ayah got his extra money, by being a football umpire in the evening.
All the amature clubs matches, he will be there, umpiring the games.Ayah keep fit by running up and down the football feild.
Malacca has vast amount of amature football clubs, those days.Name it, Kubu United,Dunlop United,Lee Sports Club,MCI United,Kg.Morten F.C.
They were the pioneers in the minor league.

Each match the umpire service charge WAS RM5.00.Saturday and Sunday is a full schedual for ayah.At time he has to matches one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Thus if there is 5 games in a week there is an extra RM20.00 a week for ayah.
RM5.00 in early 60's is a big amount.
Considering a goverment clerk pay was only R150 a month and that is how he managed his finance to feed all four of us,educate, and dress us decently.

I bear witness to Allah Almighty, ayah is not a 'CORRUPT' government servant.
He leads his life decently and earn his piece of bread to feed us in a likely manner, far from the the element of corruption.

Anybody dares to challege this statement please do so 'BUT' beware the court is all hearing!

The evening collection will goes to his LP collection of Titik Puspha,Ernie Djohan,Lilie Suryani,S.Affendi.Bing Selamat,Gersang etc.etc.etc.Not to forgetting Matt Monroe,Big Brother Frank,King Nat etc etc.

It was from ayah I learn to appreciated collectable items.
Ayah has amazing oldies LP's and still in his possession at home.
The umpire fees, goes to his little collectable space nice and neatly arrange

His sportmanship brought him everywhere. He plays tennis for the RISDA sport club, and still plays tennis right up when he is retired up until he met with an fatal accident which causes him to limp.
A handicap man,now but he still does 'senamrobik' everyday.
You find him doing his routine at the Bukit Serindit Park everyday except when it is raining.

May Allah protect my beloved Ayah.
May be one day I tell the story how ayah tried to groom me to be a national tennis player and match me with Adam Malik the first Tennis Pro from Malaysia. Its a long to brag and it begins way back in 1970 when I was in Standard 5.

In the mean time there is only one Dad,that is My Ayah that has 'NEVER EVER'
"Curi Ayam To Feed His Entire Family"
Syukur Lillah my families purely tummy is clean.

That Is My Inyik.- Sheihk Sulaiman AlRasuli Candung

Memegang Teguh Mazhab Syafi'i

The Minang Connection

The "MINANG CONNECTION" aka France Connection 1 & 2

Well.......well, after the post mortem on Yasmin's "Sepet",
how very true the facts which are hidden and swept under the carpet all this years.
We are the lazy lot, unimaginative, unproductive, under achivers and most of all the bricking among us are stabbing and the bitching and clonning and many more.....are destroying us and laid a bad example to our juniors.

Copy the Minang "a good living example where hard working strive and bravery persist.Recorded history documented.that they are the pioneers and captain of the industry in all sector.
In field of education the name HAMKA,Agus Salim,Sheikh Sulaiman AlRasuli Candung,Hatta etc.is unanymous, failling to quote them means
you would fail in your history lesson.
In buisness go to Selayang,Gombak.Tampin,Chow Kit etc..you see them working day and night.Great risk taker and able sales man and women.
"Piti nun sikit dibawo pulang buek isteri di kampuang"
litery translate :"the little money is sent home for the wife and family.'

We need mentor and social mobiliser like Yasmin.
U-Wei.please stop day dreaming there is a line between cost effective and avant-grand but you are good.I am looking forward for Aflin Shuki's golden tourch, which he has.
Free art is at cost. All we need is a good script writer.
"Cara pengolahan bahasa dengan intonasi yang betul"(right methodology in speech intonation and proper usage of the language)

FINAS..............lessen the web scab of the industry.Let set the momento.Less politic could do.After all it merely a film, no moral judgement needed.
The whole idea is to get people to see and feel QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT and not some scum bag spitting in public gallary.

As Anite Brooker mention "...not until we learn the art of writing ,we would not be able to understand what we are writing"
It is some thing like writing with a cause not rebel without a cause!.

Again worklah MELAYU...................................AND WORK!!!!!!!!

Buya H.M.Nur AlRasuli

Dearest Papa,

Wow.......ages catches us fast.I was in Jakarta over the weekend. It was short visit, the main reasons is my dearest Papa whom is my idol ever since my childhood has to undergo a by-pass surgery.
He is 76.Jakarta has always been my 2nd.home every hook ' n' corner of Kedoya is back of my mind.
Yes my "asli" is Bukit Tinggi Sumatera Barat. The family tree branches from there. It was arwah atok Pakeh immgrated to Malaka as (atok pronounce Malacca as MaaaLaaKaa. with a thick minang accent)
In matter of faith and facts, atok is not the economic immgrants as todays most migrantes. He was sentence to excile by the Dutch Authorities for his refusal to compromise with the Dutch Colonisation. He was one of the "Pejuang Bangsa" under the banner of the Sharikat Islam far before Sukarno leads PNI.Together with his late father Sheikh Sulamai AlRasuli Candung,Agus Salim,Buya Hamka's and the Minangkabaui clan fought till their last breath for the proclamation of Indonesia Raya.

As faith has it tail, atok small part in the making of Independence Indonesia was abandone when he was sentence to excile in Malacca the one time empire of the Malay world. This was way back in the 20's.Atok was newly wed to arwah nenek Sayan, my beloved nenek, pass away when I was 8 years old. From that marriage they were bless with 4 children Ibu Emma the eldest, ayah my dad,om and antie. They to immgrated to Malacca except antie born in Malaysia follow suite atok after being excile a few years. All was educated in an English school.Mind you atok sending her eldest daughter Ibu Emma to Durian Daun English Girls School when most malay parents refuse to send their daughters to school fearing their sons or daughter would become a christian convert.Sush was the mentality of the Malays then.
I reckon atok being rasional and coming from a well educated and aristocrate family in Bukit Tinggi,in social status is address as Datok Pado Sakti Nan ALun and Temenggong Pakih.Even the family school which was been set by my moyang Sheikh Sulaiman AlRasuli still in existence in Candung ,Bukit Tinggi.dare to challenge the beggot mentality of the Malays at that particular era.

Living in excile means has to work and feed the family, atok make a living till he past away in 1983 by making songkok and capal. The master craft of the traditional head wear and sandal. The craft died with him and none of us cucu took the effort to master the craft. He love his shop at Kampong Jawa to the extend every single day the shop is open for buisness except the time the went to performed his Haj in 1974 or visiting Ibu Emma in Jakarta of kapulang Kampung. He remain bachelor till he past away.Back for Kedai atok will teache us and few other fellow kamponrian Koran from maghrib till isyak. He was well look up at by the orang-orang kampong being the wise of the clad.

.......to be continue
